How Burner Works
What Is Burner?
Burner protects your privacy by allowing you to quickly and easily create new disposable phone numbers on your smartphone. Download our free iOS or Android apps to get started. No second device required.
We protect your privacy by forwarding calls on your burner through you to your main cell number. That way, your real phone number—increasingly used as a primary identifier and security tool online—is never exposed to people, companies, or risks you aren't comfortable with. The person on the other end only sees your Burner number on the caller ID, a number which can't be easily traced back to your real number.
We currently have numbers available in the United States and Canada. Australian users can also text through US/CA phone numbers. International numbers and calls are not available yet, but we are looking into them.
Your Account Number (Main Cell Phone Number)
The number you use to create your account must be your main cell phone number. We act as the middle man, so when someone calls your Burner, the Burner forwards the call to your main cell number.
Each time you sign into Burner, a verification code is set to your account number (your main cell phone number) which you enter into the app to finish logging in. Burner does not use usernames or passwords to log into the app.
How We Protect Your Real Number
Making a call
When making a call with Burner, the app redirects the call through your Burner line so the recipient only sees your Burner number—your personal number stays private. This is why it looks like you are calling your Burner when you dial out.
Receiving a call
When you receive a call to your Burner line, it will show up on your phone just like any other call and it will look like your Burner is calling you. If you have notifications turned on, you'll also get a notification to let you know it's your Burner that's ringing.
When you answer the call, you'll hear “press 1 to accept this call,” which prevents callers from hitting your main cell voicemail.
You can create text messages from within the Burner app. The texts appear to the recipient just like they would a normal text message. Only your Burner number is shown to the recipient instead of your main cell phone number.
Setting Up Your Burner
Save your Burner number to your phone contacts or your notes app so it's easy to give out. You can also add it to your Craigslist ad, your website or your business card. You can also set up a custom voicemail from within the Burner settings.
When you receive voicemails, you'll get a notification and they'll appear on your home screen as new incoming messages.
Make sure notifications are on. You'll receive a notification when you receive calls, texts or voicemails on your Burner.
